So I began reading a book today that my brother gave me:
http://www.ambitchous.com/index.htmlIt is very interesting, for the few chapters I have gotten through. It definitely spurred deep thought about life and the future, specifically my future. In my experience about 8 months before any graduation: Bachelors, Master's, Ph.D, J.D.,etc.. people all have the same question: What are your plans? What do you want to do?
Who knew these questions could be so intimidating. I do... and it is about that time for the 2nd time around. 8 months until I complete my master's degree and all of a sudden the grace period of
"yay, you are in grad school" is gone and in its place is
"what are your plans?" Once again I do not know.
This book is about realizing that ambition is okay, more than okay, it is totally appropriate and as a female I shouldn't let my ambition be curtailed by what society expects of me (and women in general).
I guess I had never thought of myself as a woman who would be impacted by what society expected of me as a woman. IE: marriage, babies, housekeeping, etc... I guess I always have 'planned'/ hoped to have a career and success and hopefully the blessing of a family of my own. Therefore, after reading this I found myself questioning the "rest of my life"... as if I was going to plan forever on September 6, 2007 at age 24. So this afternoon was rather deep. I turned to my best friend, my mom, we talked it out. I also looked to my family and friends and tried to figure out how many friends/family I have that planned their lives.. my list is not very long. I realized that life is not a matter of planning our every move, it is making the best of what we are given and keeping our eyes on the goal(s)... whatever they may be.
I do consider myself someone with a lot of ambition and enough gumption to make things happen... but as for knowing what 'things' I want to make happen, who knows.
So for today @ 24 years old I am not going to worry about "what I want to do with the rest of my life" but, I am going to continue on this path and in 8 months I will go from there. A lot can happen in 8 months.
I do know that right now I have a lot to be thankful for, I have a wonderful family, the most fantastic groups of friends, a wonderful man that I love very much, and the best little dog a girl could ask for. I have a pretty fantastic little world. Thank you all for being a part of it.
